Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series lacks satellite connectivity, but that’s likely to change in future smartphones.The tech giant announced Thursday that it has sourced technology that will allow direct communication between smartphones and satellites.
The technology will be built into Samsung’s Exynos modem, enabling calls and emergency assistance, and will be separate from Apple’s current offerings. The debut comes after various tech giants such as Apple, Qualcomm, T-Mobile and wireless his carrier announced plans to bring satellite connectivity to smartphones. Such satellite connectivity is absent from the new Galaxy S23, but the phone includes the hardware Qualcomm needs for his upcoming Snapdragon satellite service.

The announcement shows Samsung plans to offer a unique approach to one of the biggest trends in the mobile industry in 2023. His system uses satellites and other non-terrestrial vehicles to bring smartphone connectivity to remote areas such as deserts, mountains and oceans.
According to the company’s press release. Samsung also says the technology could one day be used in disaster relief efforts and to power autonomous planes and flying cars. Samsung has not disclosed when satellite connectivity will be available on the company’s phones or which devices will support them.
