Jason Lemkin, widely regarded as the father of SaaS and founder of SaaStr—a global networking platform for software executives and entrepreneurs—has made a bold move that could redefine the future of work.
Following the departure of two senior executives, Lemkin turned to alternatives rather than traditional recruitment. Instead of onboarding junior sales representatives with salaries reaching $1.5 million annually (approximately ₹1.35 crore), he replaced them with AI agents.
When the last member of his marketing team resigned, Lemkin doubled down, rebuilding the entire department with AIdriven virtual assistants. He has now declared that he will no longer hire humans for sales roles in the future.
Under this new operating model, 1.2 human managers oversee 20 AI agents, automating tasks such as problemsolving, planning, and execution. Previously, the company relied on 10 SDRs (Sales Development Representatives) and AEs (Account Executives).
Analysts note that while AI agents have significantly boosted productivity and reduced costs, they still face limitations in areas requiring creativity, emotional intelligence, and complex decisionmaking.
Lemkin’s experiment raises a provocative question: Is this the beginning of a fully AIpowered workforce in SaaS—or a risky bet on technology’s current capabilities?
