In a significant development, Apple has placed orders for the next-generation M5 chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) as it gears up for its 2025 production lineup. The M5 series is expected to feature an enhanced ARM architecture and will be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer process technology.
Despite speculation that Apple would use TSMC’s more advanced 2nm process, the company has opted for the 3nm process to balance performance and cost. The M5 chips will incorporate TSMC’s System on Integrated Chip (SoIC) technology, which uses a 3D chip-stacking approach to improve thermal management and reduce electrical leakage.
Production of the M5 chips is set to begin in the second half of 2025, with the first M5-equipped devices expected to launch by the end of 2025 or early 2026. Apple’s typical upgrade cycle suggests that devices like the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Apple Vision Pro will be among the first to benefit from the new chips.
This move reinforces Apple’s continued partnership with TSMC, which has been crucial to its successful transition away from Intel processors since 2020. The M5 chips are also expected to enhance Apple’s AI capabilities across both consumer devices and cloud services.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the launch of these exciting new devices!
