BSNL marked India’s 80th Independence Day with a bundle of new offers under the banner Freedom 2.0, and the one getting the most attention is the ₹1 SIM. The offer runs from August 12 to September 12, 2026, and it’s aimed squarely at people who’ve never used BSNL before, not existing customers looking for a top-up.
Here’s what that rupee actually buys: a new SIM with unlimited voice calls, 1GB of data a day, and 100 SMS a day, all valid for 24 days. It’s a step down from BSNL’s earlier Freedom offer, which ran 30 days and gave 2GB a day, but the price tag is still doing the heavy lifting here. The logic isn’t complicated: get people onto the network at almost no cost, and let the service itself decide whether they stick around after the trial period ends.
It’s worth being clear-eyed about what Freedom 2.0 actually is: a customer acquisition push timed to a national holiday, not a permanent pricing shift. Whether it works comes down to what happens after day 24, when the free ride ends and people start comparing regular BSNL plans against Jio, Airtel, and Vi. A ₹1 SIM gets someone in the door. Network quality is what decides if they stay.
